Why your lunch rush is slow and 3 fixes to test this week
If your midday covers are underwhelming, the problem is usually visibility, friction, or timing — here's how to fix all three fast.
The lunch window is brutal. You've got maybe 90 minutes to turn tables, move food, and make the math work — and if customers don't already know you're open, easy, and fast, they'll default to wherever they went last Tuesday.
Most slow lunch problems aren't kitchen problems. They're awareness and friction problems. The good news: all three fixes below cost almost nothing and can be running before the week is out.
1. Post a "today's lunch" message every morning by 9 a.m.
If people don't hear from you before they start thinking about lunch, you've already lost them to whoever showed up in their feed first. A short, specific message — today's special, an estimated wait time, a reason to come in — does more than any printed flyer.
The key word is specific. "Open for lunch!" is noise. "Jerk chicken rice bowl today, ready in under 10 minutes, kitchen closes at 2" is a reason to choose you. Post it to your Google Business profile, your WhatsApp broadcast list, and your Instagram story. Three places, one message, nine minutes of work.
2. Build a simple pre-order or reservation option
Long waits kill lunch business. Office workers get 45 minutes. Parents doing school pick-up have a tight window. If they can't predict how long they'll wait, they don't risk it.
You don't need expensive software. A WhatsApp number with a clear message like "Text us by 11 a.m. to pre-order and skip the queue" works immediately. Even a Google Form linked in your bio converts. The goal is giving time-poor customers a guarantee — your food will be ready when you arrive — because that guarantee is worth more than a discount.
3. Create a dead-simple lunch combo with one price
Decision fatigue is real. A customer scanning a full menu at 12:15 p.m. when they're already hungry and rushed will sometimes just give up and leave. A prominently displayed "Lunch Deal" — one protein, one side, one drink, one price, available 11–2 — removes that friction entirely.
Keep it to two or three options maximum. Price it to feel like a no-brainer (think: just below a round number, so $13.50 instead of $15). Put it on a chalkboard at the door, at the top of your menu, and in your morning social post. Regulars will start ordering it on autopilot, and first-timers have an obvious place to start.
4. Ask your last 20 lunch customers one question
Before you redesign anything, find out why people did come — and what almost stopped them. A simple follow-up message ("Hey, thanks for coming in today — can I ask what made you choose us for lunch?") gives you real data in 24 hours.
You'll start hearing patterns fast. Maybe half your lunch customers drove past you on the way to the office. Maybe three people mention they found you on Google Maps. Maybe nobody says Instagram. That tells you exactly where to focus your morning post, your signage energy, and your pre-order push. Gut feeling is expensive; a quick question is free.
5. Retarget the people who've already eaten with you
New customer acquisition during the lunch rush is hard. Re-activating someone who ate with you three weeks ago is much easier — they already like you. A short broadcast message to your existing customer list ("Haven't seen you in a while — lunch on us this week, 10% off if you come in before 2 p.m.") can fill seats on a slow Tuesday without any ad spend.
Build this list over time by asking every customer at checkout: "Want us to send you our weekly specials on WhatsApp?" Most will say yes. That list becomes one of the most valuable things your restaurant owns.
If keeping up with daily posts, pre-order messages, broadcast lists, and customer follow-ups sounds like more work than you have hours for — that's exactly the kind of operational load a Sidekyk is built to carry. Tell your Sidekyk on WhatsApp what your lunch special is each morning, and it handles the posting, the reminders, and the follow-up messages so you can stay in the kitchen where you're actually needed. sidekyk.ai
